The holiday facilities of the Co.Ge.Tur consortium are located on the side of Calabria that overlooks the Tyrrhenian, opposite the Aeolian Islands (less than two hours away, from the port of Tropea), along the section of coastline from Tropea to Capo Vaticano, that called Costa Bella (Beautiful Coast) to be more precise. The entire section of coastline from Pizzo Calabro to Nicotera Marina is referred to as the Costa degli Dei.
It is undoubtedly one of the southern locations most sought after by Italians and foreigners and a place full of history and beauty.
Tropea is the natural capital of the Costa Bella (as well as of the Costa degli Dei), from a touristic, historic and cultural point of view and it also constitutes the most interesting location in Calabria thanks to its beautiful and modern tourist port, its picturesque alleyways and its centuries-old town squares littered with colourful shops, ice-cream parlours, restaurants, pizza houses and local nightclubs.
Nearby Capo Vaticano, on the other hand, which has the majority of the holiday establishments is famous for its splendid bays (Bay of Riaci, Formicoli, Torre Marino, Grotticelle and Santa Maria), its white sandy beaches (Tono, Tonicello and Torre Ruffa), some fascinating sea beds and a surrounding hinterland packed full of history and traditional local produce famous the world over, such as the Red Onion of Tropea and ‘Nduja di Spilinga (a spicy spreadable sausage of smoked pork, unique to Calabria).
The writer Giuesppe Berto, who was born in Veneto, chose to make his home here and it is where he died after having written: “The section of coastline which culminates in Capo Vaticano is crammed full of history and beauty. It could almost be called Costabella, with a hint of regret and nostalgia.”
And it is still, to this day, one of the most enchanting places imaginable.
